The National Eye Institute of Sudan (Nes) of Sudan, South is a public hospital that was established by the American Society of Ophthalmology in 1951. The institute has many facilities that include an ophthalmic laboratory, an ophthalmic operating room, two wards for post-operative care, and two wards for outpatient care.

The institute serves as a teaching center for ophthalmology residents who are required to complete their training at Nes before they can be licensed to practice medicine independently. It also provides free eye surgery and treatment to needy patients from all over Sudan.

The hospital was established on 1st November 1945 by the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS). It was called “The Red Crescent Hospital” with 20 beds at that time. In 1956, it was renamed to Al-Shifa Teaching Hospital of Sudan with an increase in bed numbers to 100 beds.

The Sudanese Armed Forces General Hospital was established in 1985 as a military hospital for the Sudanese Armed Forces. It was later opened to the public in 1999 and became a public hospital in 2002.
