Studying in the UAE is a major undertaking for you and your family. The experience will bring many opportunities, as well as a variety of cultural experiences. But planning for your relocation can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to your healthcare needs. Healthcare insurance in the UAE is required to live here — whether you’re a resident or a student. Most schools/universities have a minimum level of health insurance that covers their students, but most of these plans do not cover spouses or children. Since local university-based plans typically cover only the individual, a plan covering dependent children/spouses must be purchased. Therefore, families seeking comprehensive coverage that allows them to receive treatment at some of the best hospitals in the world, as well as satisfy their respective emirate requirements (e.g., Dubai Health Authority [DHA] or Abu Dhabi Department of Health [DoH]) will need to purchase expatriate/international plans.
The Mandate: Why You Need Coverage
The UAE considers Public Health very important. In order to keep your residency visa active, every person in the UAE must be covered by health insurance that is valid. If you are an international student supporting your spouse and/or children, you are also financially liable for their health insurance coverage.
For example, in Dubai, the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has implemented the “Essential Benefits Plan” (EBP), which applies to low-income individuals. However, as a general rule, the EBP does not apply to the dependents of international students. As with many government programs, the Department of Health (DoH) in Abu Dhabi has much more stringent regulations regarding the need to show proof of health insurance coverage. If you cannot prove that you and your dependents have health insurance, you may be subject to significant fines and/or experience delays in processing/renewing your visa.

Deep Dive into Coverage: What Matters Most
When you are looking at these plans, don’t just look at the price tag. Look at the “Network.” In the UAE, your “Network” determines which hospitals you can walk into and use your card. If you live in Dubai Silicon Oasis but your plan only covers clinics in Deira, you’re going to have a bad time.
1. Inpatient vs. Outpatient Care
Inpatient care covers hospital stays, surgeries, and serious emergencies. Outpatient care covers doctor consultations, lab tests, and prescriptions. For a family with children, outpatient coverage is essential. Kids get fevers, they need check-ups, and they need vaccinations. A plan that only covers “emergencies” will leave you paying out-of-pocket for every pediatrician visit.
2. Maternity and Pediatric Services
If you are planning to expand your family, pay close attention to maternity waiting periods. Most premium plans have a 10-to-12-month waiting period before you can claim maternity benefits. If you arrive already pregnant, you will need a specific “Maternity Rider,” which can be significantly more expensive.
3. Chronic Condition Management
DHA mandates that basic plans cover chronic conditions (like diabetes or asthma) up to a certain limit. However, international students often find that local “Basic” plans have very low sub-limits for these. If a family member has a pre-existing condition, an international plan like Cigna or Allianz is often safer because their limits are much higher—often in the millions of dirhams.
Understanding the Cost Factors
Why is one plan 15,000 AED and another 30,000 AED? It usually comes down to three things:
- The Network Tier: “Premium” networks include the American Hospital Dubai or City Hospital. “Standard” networks might exclude these high-end facilities to keep premiums low.
- The Deductible (Co-pay): This is the amount you pay out-of-pocket at each visit. A 20% co-pay is standard in the UAE. If you want a 0% co-pay, your annual premium will skyrocket.
- Geographical Scope: Do you need coverage only in the UAE? Or do you want coverage when you travel back home or to other countries? Global coverage adds a premium but provides peace of mind for international students.
Actionable Selection Tips: How to Choose Wisely
Don’t buy the first plan your university suggests. Follow these steps to ensure you’re getting the best value:
- Use a Broker: Sites like Pacific Prime or InsuranceHub.ae are invaluable. They don’t charge you extra; they get a commission from the insurer. In exchange, they give you a side-by-side comparison of 5+ providers.
- Verify Hospital Proximity: Check if your preferred local hospital (e.g., Rashid Hospital or Mediclinic) is on the “Direct Billing” list. “Direct Billing” means you show your card and pay only your co-pay. “Reimbursement” means you pay the full bill and wait weeks to get your money back.
- Disclose Everything: Never hide a pre-existing condition. If the insurer finds out later, they can cancel your policy and refuse to pay, leaving you with a massive bill and a potential legal issue.
- Check for “Iqama” Compatibility: Ensure the plan is approved for your specific visa type. Your broker can confirm if the policy certificate is accepted by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA).
Pro Tips:
It’s an important part of securing a student visa for yourself, but also provides the safety net needed to allow you to study without worrying about the cost of a medical emergency depleting your savings, and ultimately taking away from your ability to provide for your family as a student. The UAE has world class healthcare options available, so when choosing a health insurance policy for your family, you should consider what network they are affiliated with (and therefore have access to), review the details of coverage for maternity care, and look for a company that provides 24 hour, 7 day a week digital support. All these factors contribute to a very worthwhile investment in both your family’s health, and your own sense of security.
