Guatemala is a country in Central America and it is one of the poorest countries in the world. In Guatemala, there are many challenges for health system such as poverty, low education level and lack of access to health care. The health system in Guatemala is not well developed and lacks resources.

The healthcare system in Guatemala has been improving over the years, but it still has a long way to go. The government has been trying to improve medical facilities across the country but they have faced many challenges because of a lack of funds.

In Guatemala, there are 478 physicians per 100 000 people which is less than half of what is needed per capita for a developed country. The government spends only about 1% on healthcare which means that most people cannot afford private health care.

1.Hospital General San Juan de Dios

The Hospital General San Juan de Dios has a wide range of facilities for both patients and visitors to use. The hospital has an area of ​​210 hectares and has a capacity for 1,500 patients.

It has 1,600 beds and 15 operating rooms.

The hospital has 8 intensive care units (ICU) with a total of 135 beds.

It also offers 4 pediatric ICUs with a total capacity for 60 beds and 5 neonatal ICUs with a total capacity for 50 beds.

The Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia was founded on October 25th, 1954 by President Juan José Arévalo Bermejo. Its first location was on Calle Central and Avenida Reforma, but due to its popularity with patients it had to move to a bigger location on Avenida Reforma 10-08 Zona 13.

In 1990, the hospital had to move again because its facilities were insufficient for its needs. The new facility was built next door and it was inaugurated on September 27th, 1994 by President Jorge Serrano Elías.

The Hospital General Santa Maria Menendez y Gómez was founded in 1701 by order of King Philip V of Spain to provide medical services for the inhabitants of what was then the capital city, Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala. The hospital was originally named “Hospital Real”, but it was renamed in honor of Saint Mary Magdalene when it became a Catholic institution.

The hospital has been used as an infirmary for wounded soldiers during several military conflicts, most notably during the 1847-1848 civil war between liberal and conservative forces led by Rafael Carrera and Agustín Guzman respectively.
