The hospital was founded on 23rd November 1856 by Dr Henry Ward as a leper colony, but it was later converted to a general hospital in 1879, when it became known as St Ann’s Bay Hospital (SABH). The first medical superintendent was Dr John Francis Hinds who served from 1883 to 1890 and was succeeded by Dr William Haughton who served from 1890 to 1906; Dr Charles Fenton who served from 1906 to 1917; and Dr Aubrey Wards who served until 1944 when he retired due to ill health.
