The hospital has two main entrances: one on Rue de Zouina and another on Rue de la République. The hospital has a capacity for over 1,000 beds and serves more than 22,000 people per day. It is also the main referral centre for the vast majority of hospitals in Mauritania. The hospital has been visited by many heads of states and royalty from around the world during its history. On 12 July 2012, King Mohammed VI visited Nouakchott along with his wife and daughter as part of his first official visit to Mauritania since assuming power as king in 2009. The king later declared that he had “a dream to build an international airport to serve all nations”, which would be built within two years and would cost $1 billion dollars (€740 million).

This name change is due to a request from local residents who wanted to honor their ancestors who died at this hospital during World War I (1914-1918). The construction started in 2010 and was supposed to be finished within 3 years at a cost of $3 billion USD (about $1 billion USD – $2 billion USD). Since then, construction has continued at an increasing pace with no end in sight for this facility.
The hospital is located on a hill overlooking an area where there are no buildings or infrastructure other than roads that lead to it from other areas around town (see map below). The road that leads up to it runs right through some trees but beyond that there are nothing but open fields with very little vegetation.
