Attaining an education in Qatar is a life-changing experience, whether through a branch campus at Education City or by attending Qatar University, the educational opportunities available are of the highest quality around the globe. For many students who have families, there are multiple logistical issues related to relocating to another country. One of the most pressing logistical issues is medical insurance. In Qatar, obtaining medical insurance is not merely as a safety net; it is required by law.
In recent years, Qatar’s healthcare environment has experienced dramatic changes due to new mandates that require nearly all non-GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) visitor/residents to purchase private health insurance. Students will therefore need to weigh the cost of a university group plan against the costs associated with purchasing local Qatari-provided insurance or global international insurance. The below guide lists the top ten health insurance options for students and their dependents and includes the necessary information to help you make informed decisions when selecting health insurance options for yourself and your dependents while also being mindful of your financial situation.
Is Family Medical Insurance Mandatory in Qatar?
“Bottom line, yes. Most foreign nationals working as expats in Qatar need private health insurance for themselves and their dependents. Although the public healthcare system run by Hamad Medical Corp (HMC) is superior, private insurance is usually needed to get into it as an expatriate. Universities in Qatar have made this requirement very clear. All three universities in Qatar (Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown and Northwestern) have made private insurance mandatory for students enrolled at their campuses. Each university has also set a minimum private coverage limit of QAR 500,000 up to QAR 1,000,000+ per person on each family member’s policy. Students who wish to drop their campus based plan must provide proof that they have a private family policy with comparable coverage levels. Dropping one’s campus-based plan without having a valid private policy can cause students to be placed on a “hold” status which may interfere with their ability to register for classes and/or renew their visa.”
Understanding the Costs: Individual vs. Family
There are large price differences between an individual student’s health insurance and a family plan. An individual student may expect to spend from QAR 2,800 to QAR 6,000 per year. Adding a spouse and children to your policy will usually cost you another 150-300 percent than what you would have paid as a single student. The extra money is mostly due to maternity coverage, pediatrics, and that children under age five have a high probability of being treated in an ambulatory setting.
You should always check before you purchase to see if your university has dependent riders available. It might be less expensive to leave the student with the university group plan and obtain a separate local plan for the rest of the family. At other times, purchasing a global family plan may save you money over time.
Top 10 Insurance Options for Student Families
1. Qatar University Group Plan (QIC)
This is often the baseline for value. Managed by Qatar Insurance Company (QIC), this plan is designed specifically for the student body.
- Cost: Approximately QAR 2,800–3,200 for the student. Family add-ons are significantly higher but offer streamlined billing.
- Why it works: It offers direct billing at campus clinics and major network hospitals. It is the path of least resistance for compliance.
2. Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) Plan
GU-Q requires a comprehensive policy that includes mental health benefits—a rarity in some basic plans.
- Cost: Individual student premiums range from QAR 4,500–5,200.
- The Benchmarks: They require a minimum coverage of QAR 750,000. Use this figure as your target when shopping for your spouse and kids to ensure the whole family has equivalent care.
3. Carnegie Mellon & Northwestern Qatar Plans
These Education City giants set the bar high for coverage.
- Limit: Minimums often hit QAR 1,000,000.
- Family Tip: These plans often use international partners. Check if your insurer allows you to upgrade to a “Family Tier” that includes maternity, as this is often more cost-effective than a standalone maternity rider.
4. Qatar Insurance Company (QIC) – Local Expat Plans
As the largest insurer in the region, QIC offers “Life & Medical” products specifically for residents.
- Network: Excellent access to premium facilities like Sidra Medicine and Al Emadi Hospital.
- Best for: Families who plan to stay in Qatar year-round and want the widest possible local network.
5. Doha Insurance Company
This is a favorite for students whose spouses might be working part-time or under local sponsorship.
- Focus: Strong regional medical plans. They are known for efficient processing of inpatient hospitalizations.
- Actionable Advice: If your spouse secures employment in Qatar, check if their employer can sponsor a family group policy, as corporate rates are often 20% lower than individual family quotes.
6. QLM Life & Medical Insurance
QLM is highly regarded for its digital-first approach and Sharia-compliant (Takaful) options.
- Key Feature: They often provide visitor/family policies with no waiting periods for pre-existing conditions in specific tiers.
- Benefit: A massive network of both public and private providers, making it easy to find a doctor near your residence.
7. Cigna Global
Cigna is a titan in the international expat space.
- Structure: Their plans are modular. You start with “Core Outpatient” and add modules for vision, dental, or maternity.
- Cost: Individual student-level global plans start around QAR 4,500.
- Best for: Families who travel back home during summer and winter breaks. Your coverage travels with you.
8. Allianz Care
Allianz offers some of the highest annual limits in the industry.
- Tiered Options: Care, Care Plus, and Care Pro allow you to scale your coverage.
- Global Reach: Includes optional coverage for the U.S., which is rare for local Qatari plans. This is ideal if you plan to transfer to a U.S. home campus later.
9. APRIL International
APRIL focuses on the user experience. Their app allows for easy “telemedicine” calls, which is a lifesaver for parents with young children who have minor ailments.
- Flexibility: You can scale benefits up or down based on your budget each year.
- Digital Tools: 24/7 access to doctors via your phone, reducing the need for late-night ER visits for non-emergencies.
10. IMG Global
Frequently used for “waiver” purposes. If your university allows you to use an external provider, IMG is often the most affordable way to meet the high limit requirements.
- Coverage: Excellent for emergency evacuation and repatriation.
- Note: Maternity usually carries a 12 to 24-month waiting period. If you are planning to expand your family soon, read the fine print carefully.
Practical Strategy: A 4-Step Checklist
Choosing a plan is more than just looking at the price tag. You must look at the “Network List”—the specific hospitals where you won’t have to pay out of pocket.
Step 1: Verify the University Waiver
Before buying a private family plan, get the “Waiver Requirements” document from your university’s health office. It will list the exact QAR amount and specific benefits (like mental health or repatriation) that the policy must include. Do not buy a plan until you know it will be accepted by the registrar.
Step 2: Location Scouting
Qatar is small, but traffic can be heavy. Look for a plan that includes “Direct Billing” at a clinic within a 15-minute radius of your apartment. If you live in Lusail, ensure your provider covers facilities in that area. Paying upfront and filing for reimbursement is a tedious process that can take 30 to 60 days. Direct billing is a necessity for student budgets.
Step 3: Scrutinize Maternity and Pediatrics
If you have a spouse of childbearing age, the maternity waiting period is your biggest hurdle. Most private plans in Qatar require you to be a member for 10 to 12 months before they cover pregnancy. If you arrive already pregnant, you will likely need to rely on the public Hamad system, which will require a health card and separate fees.
Step 4: Use a Broker
Don’t try to navigate the fine print alone. Brokers who specialize in the Qatari market can provide side-by-side comparisons of Cigna, Allianz, and QIC. Often, their services are free to you because they are paid by the insurers. They can help you find “bridge” policies if your family is arriving a few months after you.
Summary of Options
| Type of Plan | Typical Student Cost | Family Availability | Best For |
| University Group | QAR 2,800–5,500 | Limited Add-ons | Ease of use and compliance |
| Local Qatari | QAR 3,000–6,000 | Yes (+150-300%) | Strongest local hospital access |
| International | QAR 4,500+ | High Flexibility | Frequent travelers/Global mobility |
Pro tips:
It is amazing what one can accomplish when balancing school and raising a family. In Qatar, knowing that you have a comprehensive medical insurance plan provides you peace of mind as you pursue your education without having to worry about how much it will cost to take care of a child who has a fever or was injured. Begin searching for an insurance provider at least three months prior to your relocation date. Once you understand the requirements of your university’s program, you will be able to choose an insurance plan that includes direct billing from local clinics so that your family’s health issues will never stand in the way of your academic success.
If you are still unsure as to which type of plan to purchase, please contact your university’s international student services department. The staff may have guides or materials regarding “Student Families” that detail which local insurance providers were the most reliable for the university’s international students in previous years.
