Ain Shams University Hospital of Lebanon was founded on January 1st, 1894 by Dr. Georges Kahwaji. It started as a small clinic for treating people with infectious diseases and later developed into a hospital for general medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, ophthalmology, ENT (Ear Nose Throat), dentistry and radiology.

The hospital has three departments: emergency ward (ER), intensive care unit (ICU) and surgical wards which are located in different parts of the building; all three departments are connected by an emergency corridor that leads to the ER department.

The hospital was established in 1875 by an order issued by the Ottoman Sultan Abdul-Hamid II. The current building was built between 1878 and 1884 on a site which had been used as a cemetery since 1587. The building was designed by architect Rifat Chadirji and completed with funds provided by philanthropist Abdurrahman Bey Karamustafa who also funded construction of other public buildings such as the Hamra Hotel and Dar el-Sultan Mosque.
