Pakistan has a population of 190 million. The health system in Pakistan is divided into three sectors:
1. Public sector which includes health facilities run by the government and non-governmental organizations
2. Private sector which includes private hospitals, clinics, and laboratories

The public sector is the major provider of healthcare services in Pakistan with over 2,000 health facilities across the country that provide free or subsidized treatment to those who cannot afford it. The hospital has a total of 938 beds with an annual capacity of over 30,000 admissions. The hospital has a state-of-the-art intensive care unit (ICU) which has been designated as a level III ICU by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH).

The hospital was established in 1992 by a group of doctors and engineers led by Dr. Ayub Khan. The hospital has been run by the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust since 1997 and it was renamed to Shifa Hospital after Dr. Ayub Khan’s death in 2006.
It has a capacity of 750 beds but only 400 beds are operational currently due to shortage of funds for expansion and renovation work.

The Lahore General Hospital was established in 1883 as a military hospital and it became a civilian hospital in 1947. Nishtar Hospital was established by Pakistani philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi on July 14, 1957. The hospital was named after his mother Hazrat Bilquis Edhi. It was inaugurated by then-President of Pakistan Ayub Khan and Prime Minister Huseyn Suhrawardy on November 7, 1957.

The hospital was founded by Dr. Mian Mohammad Sharif on November 16th, 1951 with a single ward of 50 beds at Rawalpindi Cantonment Board Quarters (now called the General Headquarters). The hospital has grown significantly since then with its current capacity being 1,000 beds and having more than 300 doctors on staff.

The Khyber Teaching Hospital was established in 1885 by British soldiers as a military hospital. In 1947, it was converted into a civilian hospital with the help of the United States Army Medical Service. The facility has grown over time with new buildings being added to accommodate for more patients and staff members. The Mayo Hospital was established in 1912 in Lahore by Dr. Charles Henry Mayo and his two brothers Drs. William James Mayo and Charles Horace Mayo to provide medical care for the British troops stationed there during the First World War. The hospital was named after their father Dr. William Worrall Mayo who had died in 1911 at age 89 years old (1).
The original building of the hospital was designed by an American architect with input from Sir Ganga Ram who was an Indian engineer-architect responsible for designing many buildings including the Lahore Museum (2).
Today it has grown into one of the largest hospitals in Pakistan that also provides training programs to doctors and nurses (3).

Pakistan has a huge population of over 180 million with a literacy rate of 74%. The country has the third-largest number of physicians in the world.
