The National Maternity Hospital was founded by Dr William Stokes on Holles Street in 1827, when he was Professor of Midwifery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, as a teaching hospital for midwives and nurses.
In 1894 it became a teaching hospital for medical students from King’s Inns and Trinity College Dublin, and later also for nursing students from Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
