It has around 100 beds and provides services for pediatric, neonatal, obstetric, and gynecologic care as well as other general medical services such as radiology, laboratory tests, and emergency care..
The hospital has had its fair share of challenges since opening. In the 1980s the building was renovated to improve its facilities but there have been ongoing problems with water supply since then. In 2014, it was announced that Dr. José Simeón Cañas Hospital would be closed down due to lack of resources but this did not happen due to the protests from the public.
