The Al-Kindi Hospital is the largest private hospital in Iraq with more than 300 beds. It was founded by Dr. Ayman Al-Kindi in 2004 to provide quality healthcare for Iraqis who cannot afford it themselves.

It was built on the site of an old British military base which was bombed during the 2003 invasion of Iraq by US forces. The hospital opened its doors four years later in 2008 with a ceremony attended by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki and US Ambassador Ryan Crocker.

The Al-Khadimiya Hospital was established in 1948 by the Iraqi Ministry of Health with an initial capacity of 100 beds. It was designed to be a small regional hospital for Baghdad residents. In 1958, the Ministry of Health built a new building for the hospital which had a capacity of 300 beds and increased its services to include surgery and obstetrics departments.

In 1979, it became a teaching hospital for medical students from Baghdad University College of Medicine until 1987 when Saddam Hussein’s regime decided to close all hospitals not under Baath Party control.

The current director of the hospital is Dr. Abdul-Nasser al-Jumaili who took over after Dr. Salih Dulaimi died on March 2nd 2017 due to an air strike by Iraqi forces on the city of Mosul while he was performing surgery at the Al-Zahraa Medical Complex (which was under ISIL control).

The emergency department provides first-aid treatment for patients who are brought in by ambulance or arrive at the hospital on their own. The service includes resuscitation, stabilization and transfer to other departments or hospitals if necessary.
