Haiti is a country in the Caribbean with a population of roughly 10.7 million people. Health care in Haiti is provided by public and private institutions, and is offered to all citizens for free.
Public health care facilities are under-staffed, overcrowded, and lack resources such as medications, bedding and food. Private health care facilities are more expensive than public ones, but offer better quality services such as medicines and doctors who speak English.
Haiti has a low rank in the world for healthcare – it ranks at number 174 out of 188 countries on the World Health Organization’s Global Health Index 2017 report.

It now has an emergency room with a CT scanner, operating theater with four beds, two intensive care units with eight beds each, laboratory facilities for blood tests and X-rays as well as maternity wards and pediatric wards.

It was originally named Hôpital Universitaire des Mères et Enfants de L’Association Américaine de la Croix Rouge (HUMMELA). The first part of its name “Hôpital” means hospital, while “Universitaire” means university and “des Mères et Enfants” means mothers and children. The second part, “de L’Association Américaine de la Croix Rouge (HUMMELA)” translates to “of the American Red Cross Society.”

The hospital is located in a rural area and has a staff that is not experienced in dealing with the aftermath of natural disasters. This means that they are equipped to deal with minor injuries but cannot handle major trauma cases. There are also only two operating rooms for surgical procedures, which limits the number of surgeries that can be performed per day.
The hospital does have an emergency room for patients who need immediate care and will accept patients from other nearby hospitals if necessary but it does not have any beds for long-term care or intensive care units for patients who need more specialized care than what the emergency room can provide.

Saint Francois D’Assise Hospital is the largest and most modern medical institution in Haiti. It has a capacity of 900 beds and was built with the assistance of over $100 million from international donors.
The hospital has state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for diagnosis, treatment and surgery. It also has a well-equipped laboratory for blood analysis and other diagnostic tests; an intensive care unit with 12 beds; a surgical suite with six operating theaters; an emergency room; an x-ray department with four high resolution units; a mammography unit with two machines; a CT scanner equipped to perform nuclear medicine procedures; physical therapy department, including hydrotherapy pool, physiotherapy rooms, cardiac rehabilitation clinic and rehabilitation rooms for children with cerebral palsy or other disabilities.
