The hospital was founded in 1881 by Queen Victoria to provide healthcare to British servicemen stationed on the island during its time as a colony of Great Britain. It was originally called St George’s Barracks Military Hospital, but it was renamed after Queen Victoria’s death in 1901.

The hospital has two main buildings, namely the Main Building which houses most departments and wards, and the Medical Unit which houses surgical wards, intensive care units and other specialist services. There are also two other buildings that are used for rehabilitation purposes – one for orthopaedics and one for neurology rehabilitation.
