Guyana is a small country in the northern part of South America. The country has a diverse terrain, with forests and mountains, lowlands, and coastal regions. Guyana shares its borders with Brazil, Venezuela, Suriname, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Guyana’s health system is influenced by its colonial history. It was once part of the British colony of British Guiana but gained independence in 1966.

The health system in Guyana is divided into two parts: public and private healthcare systems.

Public healthcare includes government hospitals and clinics that are free for anyone to use if they are on a government-provided insurance plan or have a social security card which provides them with access to free healthcare services at any hospital or clinic that participates in the public health system.

Private healthcare includes private hospitals and clinics that require payment at the point of service for its services but provide more specialized care than public institutions do.

Top 20 Hospitals in Guyana are:

1.Port Mourant Hospital:

The Port Mourant Hospital is located in Guyana and is the only hospital in the area. It has a lot of facilities, but it is not well equipped with the most modern medical equipment.

The hospital was established in 1849 and has been operating ever since. The hospital was built to accommodate the growing population of Port Mourant at that time who were suffering from malaria and other diseases. The building was originally made of wood and had a thatched roof, but it was rebuilt with brick walls and a corrugated iron roof in 1892.

In 2008, there were two wards for male patients, one for female patients, one ward for maternity cases, one ward for children under five years old and one ward for people who are severely ill or elderly. There are also two operating rooms (one large room with three beds) that can be used as an emergency room as well as a laboratory that offers services like blood tests, urine tests and X-rays.

2.New Amsterdam Hospital:

The New Amsterdam Hospital is situated in the capital city of Guyana, Georgetown. It is a tertiary referral hospital that provides comprehensive healthcare services to the residents of Georgetown and other parts of the country.

The New Amsterdam Hospital has an emergency room with a 24-hour service. It has an accident and emergency department to provide care for patients who have been injured or are experiencing life-threatening conditions. The hospital also has a dental clinic that offers dental care for children and adults and a psychiatric ward that provides inpatient treatment for mental illness.

3.Linden District Hospital:

Guyana is a country in the northern part of South America. The capital of Guyana is Georgetown. It has a population of approximately 738,000 people. The country has two official languages, English and Guyanese Creole.

The Linden District Hospital was established in 1903 by the British colonial government to provide health care for the people of Linden and its surrounding areas. The hospital is located on East Coast Demerara Highway, at the junction with Hospital Road and East Coast Street in Linden, Guyana.

The hospital has a total of 115 beds including 20 beds for children and 10 beds for maternity cases. There are also three operating theatres that can be used for either major surgery or minor surgery procedures

4.Rupert Jones Memorial Hospital:

The Rupert Jones Memorial Hospital is a public hospital in the capital city of Guyana. It is located on the corner of South Road and John Street in the heart of Georgetown. The Hospital is situated at an altitude of approximately 100 meters above sea level.

The hospital has been providing healthcare to residents in and around Georgetown since its establishment. However, it has also been providing healthcare to patients from all over Guyana for more than three decades now. The hospital has a total bed capacity of 223 beds, which are distributed between various wards and departments across the hospital.

5.East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital:

The East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital (EBDRH) is situated in Georgetown, Guyana. It was established in the year 1827 and is one of the oldest hospitals in Guyana.

EBDRH has a total of 106 beds and takes care of patients from all over Guyana. The hospital offers a variety of medical services such as general surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics & gynecology, ophthalmology and psychiatry.

The hospital also has a clinical laboratory, an X-ray department, an operating room and ambulance service.

The East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital (EBDRH) is located on Regent Street in Georgetown. It has 106 beds for patients to stay overnight. The hospital also provides general surgery services for its patients as well as other medical services such as pediatrics, obstetrics & gynecology and psychiatry. There are also facilities like an X-ray department and an operating room available at EBD

6.St. Joseph’s Hospital:

The St. Joseph’s Hospital is a hospital in Georgetown, Guyana. The hospital is located at the corner of Church Street and Brickdam, with the main entrance on Church Street.

The hospital was founded in 1882 by the Sisters of Mercy, and was originally called the Georgetown Hospital. It was renamed St. Joseph’s Hospital in 1918 to honour its founder, Father Joseph Patrick Byrne. The hospital has grown over time and now consists of four buildings: Main Building (1887), North Building (1937), East Wing (1973) and South Wing (1998).

In August 2016, St Joseph’s Hospital celebrated its 130th anniversary with a month-long series of events to mark this milestone achievement in its history. This celebration included an open day which provided an opportunity for members of the public to visit some areas of the hospital that are not usually open to visitors – including various wards, operating theatres and intensive care units – as well as a gala dinner

7.Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation:

The Guyana Public Hospital Corporation (GPHA) is a public corporation in Guyana. The GPHA operates hospitals and clinics in Georgetown, Region 10, Region 11 and Region 12.

In the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, there are two major buildings that house the hospital’s departments. These are the Old Building and the New Building. The Old Building houses facilities like Out-Patient Department, Emergency Room, Pharmacy and X-Ray Department while the New Building houses Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Surgical Ward and Maternity Ward.

The GPHA has various facilities to offer to patients such as diagnostic imaging services, surgical services, maternity services, pharmacy services etc. In addition to these facilities they also have a laboratory for conducting medical tests on samples from patients with suspected infections or other diseases that require diagnosis.

8.The Queen Elizabeth Hospital:

There are three types of wards in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. These include the medical, surgical, and obstetrics wards. The hospital also has a radiology department and an emergency unit.

The medical ward is for patients who need dialysis, chemotherapy or other treatments that require close monitoring by doctors. This ward has facilities such as a laboratory, x-ray room, pathology lab and pharmacy.

The surgical ward is used to treat patients who need surgery or those who have just undergone surgery. Some of the facilities in this ward include a recovery room and operating theatre.

The obstetrics ward cares for pregnant women until they give birth to their child or children. This includes prenatal care and postnatal care for mothers and their babies after birth.

This hospital also has a radiology department that provides services such as x-rays, CT scans and MRI scans among others; an emergency unit; laboratory; pharmacy; pathology lab; recovery room; operating theatre among others

9.The National Psychiatric Hospital:

The National Psychiatric Hospital in Guyana is a mental health facility. It provides psychiatric services to patients from all over the country. It has three major facilities, namely, the Main Hospital Building, the Administration Building and the Psychogeriatric Unit.

The Main Hospital Building is where most of the clinical services are provided such as inpatient care and outpatient care. The Administration Building is where administrative services are provided like management and human resources. The Psychogeriatric Unit provides residential care for people who have been diagnosed with dementia or any other form of mental illness that causes them to behave in an unusual way.

10.The Demerara Psychiatric Hospital:

The Demerara Psychiatric Hospital is a psychiatric hospital in Guyana. The hospital was founded in 1851 by the British colonial government. It is situated on the banks of the Demerara River in Georgetown, Guyana.

The Demerara Psychiatric Hospital is the oldest and largest psychiatric hospital in Guyana. It was founded by the British colonial government in 1851 to provide mental health care to black people of African descent who were enslaved by colonialists, as well as those who were living with mental disorders or mental illness, or suffering from substance abuse problems.

Today, it provides services for patients with drug addiction problems and other conditions such as schizophrenia, depression and bipolar disorder.

11.San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH):

San Fernando General Hospital is located in the heart of the capital city of Georgetown, Guyana. It is situated on a two-acre site and has a modern building with 24-hour emergency services.

The hospital has a total of 9 wards, some of which are dedicated to specific purposes such as obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology and others. The hospital also has an intensive care unit (ICU) which is equipped with the latest medical technology that offers round-the-clock service to patients.

The hospital offers many facilities including an ambulance service for emergency cases as well as surgical facilities for all types of operations. There is also a pharmacy for medications and other treatments for patients who need them.

12.Jubilee Hospital:

The Jubilee Hospital is located in Georgetown, Guyana. It is the largest and most advanced medical facility in the country. The hospital was established in 1892 by the government of British Guiana to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee.

The hospital has a variety of facilities and departments including an Accident and Emergency Department, a Medical Unit, an Outpatient Department, a Labour Ward, a Radiology Department, a Laboratory Department and an Intensive Care Unit.

13.St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital:

St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital is a private, not-for-profit hospital in Georgetown, Guyana. The hospital was founded in 1883 by the Sisters of Mercy as a refuge for the sick and poor. It is one of only two hospitals in Guyana that are internationally accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI).

The hospital has 54 beds and has been ranked among the top five best hospitals in Guyana. It also offers a wide range of services, including general surgery, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics and urology.

St Joseph’s Mercy Hospital provides medical care to people from all socioeconomic backgrounds without discrimination. In addition to medical care, it also provides social services such as counseling and education programs for patients and their families on topics like AIDS prevention or substance abuse.

14.Cheddi Jagan Memorial Hospital:

The hospital is located in the capital city of Georgetown, Guyana. It was formerly known as the Georgetown Hospital but was renamed in honor of Cheddi Jagan after he died in 1997.

The hospital has a capacity of 214 beds, with an additional 50 beds available for short-term care. There is also a children’s ward that can accommodate up to 40 patients and a maternity ward that can accommodate up to 20 mothers at one time.

Bartica is a district in the Region Six of Guyana. It is a village that has a population of about 4,000 people. Bartica District Hospital is located in the village of Bartica and it provides health care to people in the region. The hospital has facilities such as an emergency department, operating room, maternity ward and dental clinic.

The emergency department provides care for life-threatening illnesses or injuries that need immediate attention like heart attacks or accidents. It also offers care for less serious conditions like cuts and burns. The operating room offers surgery services such as appendectomies and cyst removals. 18.Linden Public Hospital Corporation:

The Linden Public Hospital Corporation is a public hospital located in the town of Linden, Guyana. It was established in 1892 and is one of the oldest hospitals in Guyana. The hospital has been providing healthcare services to the people of Linden and its surrounding areas for over a century and a half.

The Linden Public Hospital Corporation currently has a total of 356 beds, which are divided into various wards, surgical units, and medical units. The hospital provides medical care for patients from all walks of life and from all over Guyana.

19.Cheddi Jagan Memorial Hospital:

The Cheddi Jagan Memorial Hospital (CJMH) is the only tertiary hospital in Guyana and the only public hospital in the country. It is located in Georgetown, Guyana’s capital city. CJMH was named after Dr. Cheddi Jagan, who was a Guyanese politician and physician.

A major factor that influences the quality of care at CJMH is its location. The hospital has a large catchment area which includes people from all over Guyana and neighbouring counties such as Suriname and Brazil, which makes it difficult to have an adequate number of doctors for everyone who needs care at CJMH.

The hospital also lacks some facilities such as an MRI machine which can lead to long waiting periods for patients who need this form of imaging.

20.West Demerara Regional Hospital:

The West Demerara Regional Hospital is located in Guyana. The hospital is an institution that provides healthcare to the people of the region. It has a number of facilities, such as medical and surgical wards, an out-patient department, a dental clinic, an operating theatre and a laboratory.

The hospital also has an emergency room that operates 24 hours every day. It offers emergency care for patients who have been involved in accidents or who are experiencing severe pain or discomfort.
