It became a university teaching hospital and was renamed to University Hospital Osijek in 1979. The hospital was founded in 1872 as the District Hospital for Virovitica and Žumberak. It was originally a small building with 20 beds but it quickly expanded to include more departments and beds, as well as more specialized staff members.

In 1993 the Croatian Parliament passed legislation that made it illegal for hospitals to refuse admittance based on their ability to pay or their citizenship status. This law also made it illegal for hospitals to refuse treatment or services due to an individual’s race, religion or gender identity.

The hospital was opened in 1932 by the Yugoslavian government and was originally called the “King Alexander I Memorial Hospital”. The hospital has seen many changes since then. In 1968 it underwent a major reconstruction that resulted in the construction of an additional building with an emergency ward.
