Dominica is a small country in the Caribbean. It has a population of only 75,000 people and is one of the poorest countries in the world.

The health system in Dominica is known to be one of the best in the world. They were ranked first by the WHO for health system performance, which was based on a number of factors like access, quality and efficiency.

Cayon General Hospital is located on the southern coast of Dominica’s capital city Roseau. It has been serving people from all over Dominica since its opening on 1st July 1956 with just one ward. The hospital has grown to include seven wards with an average patient-to-staff ratio of 1:3; it provides a wide range of services including general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, emergency care, paediatrics, psychiatry and family medicine. The hospital also offers a number of facilities such as pharmacy department and outpatient clinic for patients to visit before or after their stay

St Andrews General Hospital was opened on February 1, 1996. It has a total bed capacity of 217 and employs around 200 people. The hospital was built with a capacity for 120 beds, but due to an increasing demand for medical services, it has been upgraded to its current capacity of 217 beds.

The hospital has a total floor area of 7,000 square meters and it’s equipped with all necessary facilities like emergency room, intensive care unit, maternity ward and laboratory service.

4.Dominican General Hospital:

The hospital has a total of 15 wards with a total capacity of 1,100 beds. The hospital also has a maternity ward, an outpatient clinic and a laboratory that are all located on its premises. It also has two operating theaters with two more in process of being built.

Dominican General Hospital is located on the eastern coast of Dominica at Morne Fortune and is accessible by road from Roseau and Portsmouth via Douglas Road. The hospital can be reached by boat from Portsmouth or Roseau, with ferry services available for those who cannot make it to the island by land or sea.

5.Immaculate Heart of Mary Hospital:

The hospital has a total of 12 wards, including a maternity ward, a birthing center, a neonatal unit, an emergency room and an outpatient clinic. The facilities include more than 100 beds and more than 40 doctors who are specialists and general practitioners.

The medical staff also includes nurses, medical assistants and other support staff who provide care to patients 24 hours per day.

The hospital has the following facilities:

– Emergency Room: It serves as the main ward for patients who require urgent medical care. It has a capacity to accommodate up to 40 patients at one time.

– Out-patient Department: It provides outpatient services for patients who are not admitted into the hospital but need to be treated by doctors or nurses. This department has a capacity to accommodate up to 50 patients at one time. – Radiology Department: It provides radiography services for most types of imaging examinations such as X-ray, CT scan, MRI scan, ultrasound exam, and nuclear medicine studies. This department also handles all other types of imaging procedures

The hospital was originally built to provide health care services for members of the British colonial government and their families. The hospital began its operation with only a few beds and minimal infrastructure and equipment. As time went on, it became more heavily used by civilians as well as members of the colonial government due to its proximity to Roseau, which was then capital city of Dominica.

GIGH has a total of 4 floors in the hospital with 10 wards on each floor. There are also 2 operating theaters on the 1st floor for emergency surgeries as well as 2 wards for post-operative patients. There is also an outpatient clinic for minor surgeries and other outpatient procedures that are not done at the hospital.

There are also a number of medical facilities outside of GIGH such as general clinics where patients can get treatment for common illnesses such as malaria or skin diseases without having to go to the hospital if they do not need surgery or intensive
