Hospital Universitario Dr. José Gregorio Hernández was founded on November 8, 1944, by Dr. José Gregorio Hernandez and it is considered one of the most important hospitals in Venezuela due to its proximity to Caracas and its high level of specialization in surgery and medical care.

The hospital also has an intensive care unit (ICU) for newborns with respiratory problems, a surgery centre that performs surgeries for children with congenital malformations, a maternity ward that offers high-risk pregnancies

The Hospital Metropolitano de Barquisimeto was founded on December 2, 1857, by Dr. José Gregorio Hernández. He had just returned from Europe with knowledge of the latest medical techniques and he wanted to implement them in his homeland. In 1859, he constructed a building for his hospital which would be known as “Hospital Hernández”. This building was located on the corner of Bolívar Avenue and San Juan Street in downtown Barquisimeto.

The hospital was founded by Dr. Ignacio Morillo, a doctor who was born in Valencia, Spain, who had the dream of building a hospital that would serve the poor people of Venezuela.

In 1883 he left his native country and arrived in Venezuela with his family, where he practised medicine and served as dean of the Medical School at Central University (UCV). He died in 1887 leaving unfinished his dream project: a hospital for poor people that would be free of charge or any other form of payment.
